dates with mom

Dates with my mom are always a treat. They are also always centered around food, coffee, and window shopping (sometimes real shopping, but only on special occasions).
I remember our first date. I was a freshman in college and she was picking me up to come home for Christmas break. We were in no rush, and we decided to eat at the Cheesecake Factory for lunch. It was my favorite restaurant then. I remember where we sat and how we talked about random things, deep things, and sentimental things. (No surprise with the last one, I am the most nostalgic person ever).
The summer before college was a dramatic one, and aside from my already-attitude-prone 17-year-old self, (and let's be honest, my 21-year-old self too) it took a toll on my relationship with my parents. I remember this date with my mom because it was the first time I felt the I-am-such-an-adult-since-I'm-in-college-and-now-I-can-have-an-adult-relationship-with-my-mom-and-dad-I'm-so-mature feeling. You know the one.
Since then mom-and-daughter-dates have kind of become our thing. Our tastes have matured from Cheesecake Factory to The High Hand, from Forever 21 to Anthropologie, and from 2-hour visits to all-day visits. Sometimes pedicures and gelato get thrown in the mix, too.
I am so thankful for my mom. I suck at telling her this 95% of the time, even though she would disagree, but she's the best there is.
Oh and this place, The High Hand, is amazing. It's a nursery and cafe all-in-one, with some of the freshest, most flavorful meals I've ever had. Yesterday we had butternut squash soup and salad. Over summer we had eggs benedict (hers salmon benedict) and holy Lodi...so delicious.
